International Summer Academy 2017

The ISA 2017 will be held in Mexico City from the 23rd to the 30th July, organised and hosted by Conferencia Mariano Otero (COMO). The subject of the ISA 2017 is:

‘‘Mexico and Latin America facing the world’’.

All members of the Politeϊa Community are invited to send delegates to participate in the ISA 2017 with its unique and engaging academic programme of events (see below) and plenty of opportunities for networking and cultural discovery. Programme

The ISA 2017: ‘‘Mexico and Latin America facing the world’’.

It is composed of three cultural days, five days devoted to conferences and panels of discussion and an introductory day. Every conference day will start between 9:00 and 10:00 am and will finish around 16:00 pm with a lunch break in between. Every day will have a cultural activity or dinner, as well as free time for the participants to plan some personal sightseeing. Everyday will have a different emblematic venue with the aim to change areas in the city and cover most of it.

SATURDAY 22ND JULY: ARRIVAL DAY

We will provide transport from the airport to your accommodation downtown thanks to our Welcome Committee.

SUNDAY 23RD JULY: POLITEÏA ENCOUNTER SESSION

We will be having our introductory session at Los Pinos, the Presidential Official Residence, where we’ll have the opportunity to get to know each other, share our experiences in our own organizations and further discuss our expectations of the week-long event. A cultural/ gastronomical activity will accompany the occasion.

DAY 1. MONDAY 24TH JULY: AN APPROACH TO THE CONTEXT OF LATIN AMERICA

The first day will open the door to the problematic of the region from the geopolitics of several selected countries. It will also present some of the shared challenges such as corruption, migration, drug trafficking and national security.

Venue: Secretariat of Foreign Affairs

DAY 2. THURSDAY 25TH JULY: THE DILEMMA FOR MEXICO IN THE XXI CENTURY

Thanks to a panel format we will hear speakers from different political and ideological stands on topics as inequality, political plurality and the concept of a new citizenry through civic participation.

Venue: Senate of the Republic

DAY 3. WEDNESDAY 26TH JULY: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT 

The third day will expose a globally shared challenge and explore in depth the conversations around global warming and biodiversity in a comparative of several selected countries in Latin America. We will finally have a panel where speakers from NGO’s will exchange their views on the matter with speakers from intergovernmental organizations.

DAY 4. TUESDAY 27TH JULY: THE HUMANITARIAN CRISIS OF THE REGION

The fourth day will reflect on the topic of the human rights crisis. First of all, it will study the topic in the perspective of democracy and state crimes, in a comparative between Venezuela, Cuba and Mexico. Afterwards, it will center on the Mexican case to further understand the situation of crime, the violence, the feminicides and the struggle for equality. Venue: MUAC University Museum of Contemporary Art

DAY 5. FRIDAY 28TH JULY: THE CONSTRUCT OF A NATIONAL IDENTITY 

This day will cover topics surrounding the Latin-American identity. From the angle of multiculturalism, the richness of the cultural heritage to the challenges of the social and political inclusion of Mexico’s indigenous population. This day will also welcome a practitioner’s perspective, as we will hear from artists and creators who will give their own view on the construction of a Latin-American identity, as well as an approach to soft power strategies in international relations. Venue: Cultural Center Jesús Reyes Heroles

SATURDAY 29TH JULY: CULTURAL DAY

On this day we will all visit the Pyramids of Teotihuacan alongside an archeologist who will accompany us on the discovery of this historical place just outside Mexico City.

SUNDAY 30TH JULY: CULTURAL DAY

On this last day we will propose several visit routes for museums and emblematic places in the city to finally get together one last time in a Farewell party, preceded by a small private concert of Mexican traditional music.
